
Basil was admitted to practice in Jamaica in 1987. He graduated from the University of the West Indies having obtained a Bachelor of Laws Degree with Honours. Basil practices mainly in commercial and conveyancing law and also in pensions law.
Basil represents some of Jamaica’s leading mortgage and finance institutions as well as many Jamaican based co-operative credit unions. His commercial and conveyancing practice comprises mainly, preparation of bankers’ security documentation, loan, commercial and mortgage agreements, preparation of conditions of sale for mortgage institutions, and preparation of agreements for sale or leasing of commercial and residential properties.
He has also appeared as instructing Counsel before the Privy Council in the Air Jamaica Ltd. v. Charlton et al [1999] 1 WLR 1399, where the matter before the Board concerned a surplus fund in a defined benefits pension scheme established by the company for employees and the issue was whether the scheme and the powers exercisable there under were void for perpetuity and whether the surplus devolved by way of a resulting trust for the company and the scheme members.
Basil is a member of the Jamaican Bar Association and is an active member of the Association’s Conveyancing Law Committee.
